Scandinavian samplers of this time period often feature the borders of eight pointed stars worked in satin stitch, as well as many religious motifs and alphabets. Religious motifs are found on many continental European samplers. The crucifixion is central on this particular sampler, surrounded by an hourglass, stag, birds, ladder (symbol of the Passion), dog (faithfulness), jugs, chicken and rooster (overcomes the darkness, evil spirits), wreaths (eternity), and a Jesu gram found on a number of Scandinavian samplers. The initials of family members were almost always worked in as well. This sampler is reproduced from the Kunstindustrimuseet in Oslo, Norway access no: OK4271.
